"Bacon's Promise"

      Sir Francis Bacon's (1561-1626)
vision of science as a way to expand  infinitely "the bounds of human
empire" has been a touchstone of
the 'scientific revolution' of the
17th century.  It continues today to sustain the modern ideology of
scientific progress.

To see this ideology at work in

contemporary history, check out

Open Systems

Open systems can be found in societies, political cultures, intellectual habits, or technologies.  Wherever they are found they promote interconnectedness (as in standardized parts manufacture or open source computer codes).  In politics open systems rely on transparency and wide participation to enable the largest number of people to share in the solution of issues, and thus to support the measures needed to resolve their conflicts.

In all communities--whether large or small--open systems enable everyone to contribute whatever they may have that is useful or inspiring to the entire community.  In this way open systems enrich our
common human history as they enable all of us to experience the personal agency essential to individual growth and accountability.
